What We Do

PFLAG Bellevue/Eastside is a chapter of PFLAG national, the nation’s largest family and advocacy organization, and we adhere to the same vision and mission. We unite members of the LGBTQ community with friends, families, and allies. Our chapter serves residents of the East King County communities including Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Sammamish, Bothell, Woodinville, Duvall, Snoqualmie, and Carnation.

Our goal is to provide support, education, and advocacy. To this end, we offer a multitude of resources and services including support groups, speakers, tabling, scholarships, and educational materials, which are described here. You can also consult our 2016-2017 annual report for details on our past year’s activites.

Monthly Meetings We meet the third Thursday of each month at the Bellevue United Methodist Church. If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender-queer, or questioning, or a straight ally to a friend or family member, our meetings provide support and information in a safe and confidential space. The first half is dedicated to support groups led by trained facilitators and the second half to guest speakers from diverse backgrounds and professions who address important issues to the community.

Speaker’s Bureau We can provide a panel or individual speaker at no charge to address LGBTQ issues to educators and schools, medical and care-giving facilities, companies and corporations, government entities, faith-based institutions, community groups, and other organizations.

Community Outreach We can staff a table with PFLAG volunteers to distribute educational materials and meet the community at local events, including festivals, fairs, theatrical productions, and parades, and educational events, such as school fairs, orientation and club days, health and hospital fairs, and on. We also have a booth at Issaquah, Salmon Days and march yearly in the Seattle Pride Parade.

Scholarships We award yearly college scholarships to graduating high school students. The  applications are submitted through the Pride Foundation, making applicants also eligible for Pride Foundation scholarships.

Safe Schools We stand for safe schools for all students, in both our own work and our alliances with other safe school coalitions. Our speaker’s bureau has visited local classrooms, colleges, and Gay Straight Alliances to increase awareness of this issue and we feature guest speakers who focus on policy solutions. We also reach out to Gay Straight Alliances at our local schools and work with school librarians, counselors, teachers, and administrators to provide appropriate LGBTQ resources to students.

Educational literature We distribute brochures and other educational materials through our outreach events and website. We also provide numerous links to other online sources that have free or low cost materials.

One-on-one support. If you need to discuss an issue privately with a PFLAG facilitator, we are available to meet with you in person or set up a telephone call. For example, you might prefer to first talk with a facilitator before attending your first meeting. We also offer this service if you are a professional who seeks advise on how to best serve LGBTQ clients. Please contact us to set up one-one-support.

We rely on our volunteer membership and donations to make this all happen. You can be part of PFLAG Bellevue/Eastside, whether you are at very beginning of this journey or a long-standing member or ally of the LGBTQ community. Come to a meeting or contact us for more details.
